Message from the Captain
Cynthia Drewry, Captain
Hello DRC!!!
Well, the season is well underway now with the first 3 regattas this weekend. Our UTM athletes are at the Dad Vail Regatta this weekend, a handful of Don rowers will be competing in their singles at the Head of the Martindale on Saturday and our Juniors will have their first regatta of the season at the Mother's Day Regatta on Sunday. I wish all competitors the best of luck!
Thank you to Scott Timpson, Jim Mercer and many many others who have moved the big tree out of our way on the east side of the river north of the tennis court. Word has it that they will be back at it soon working on the tree/branches that are lying in the water on the west side of the river.
Collision Reporting - Just a reminder to all that ANY collision resulting in damage to equipment must be reported. Incident report forms can be found on the log book table in the boat bay.
"Boathouse Behaviour" - We are extremely fortunate to have a boathouse full of fantastic equipment and we must take care of it properly. No club boat is to be returned to its rack after a row without first putting it on stretchers and wiping it down/washing it. It is NOT acceptable to put it on the rack and wipe it down there. Crews are to clean debris (trees, coffee cups, you name it) out of the coach boats before the coach boats are put away. Jim has worked hard on these boats and he hates to see them in a mess. Please be sure to put away any extra stretchers, 1x trailer, coachboats etc after your training session is complete. Too often this is all left for the last person on the water.....
The Yellow Cloth Mystery - Prior to the start of the season I purchased (at my own expense) 2 large packages of yellow micro fibre cloths at Costco. 40 cloths in total. My thinking was that these are easy to rinse and dry quickly we would not be faced with smelly towels all season. After only one month, virtually all of these have disappeared. If you have taken them home to wash, thank you! If you have put them somewhere for safekeeping, thank you, and can we have them back? If you have taken them home for personal use please go to Costco and spend $16.99 for a new package and return them to the club.

Vintage DRC T-Shirts
Scott Timpson, Lieutenant Recreational
The manufacturer of our limited edition vintage shirt has provided some sample shirts for sizing purposes. Also, these shirts are made from the same material that our shirts will be made from.
If you would like to try on a sample shirt for sizing purposes, they will be in the clubhouse office for the next couple of weeks.
Please remember to order your shirts soon as we will be placing a group order by the end of the month. Shirts take 2-3 weeks to make. Provided that we get our order in on time the shirts will arrive before regattas start.
Don't miss the opportunity to wear a shirt with a simple yet classic design that was first worn at our club over 100 years ago!
Regards,
Scott
The Rec Report
News, Tips and Getting to know the Recreational Rowers of the Don Rowing Club!
Getting to know us: Every month we will profile a couple of recreational rowers. This month features veteran rower, Gudrun Hahn and first year rower, Vineet Honkan
Introducing...Gudrun Hahn
Gudrun was bitten by the rowing bug in 2003 and has looked "backwards" ever since. She is thankful to the coaches, who have worked diligently to turn us into respectable rowers. In her opinion, the challenge is to row a balanced and synchronized 8, and when that happens, there is no bigger thrill except to race with Nancy S. at the helm.
When her attention shifts away from rowing, she pursues gardening, participates in the occasional canoe trip with her canine companion, goes on long walks and oh yes, rediscovers her family.
Best Quote: "Rowing is my fountain of youth".
Introducing...Vineet Honkan
I joined the Don Rowing Club back at the end of June '08, and have been having a lot of fun there. Started out as a LTR student rowing a double with a friend...by the end of the LTR program I became a full-time member in the rec program. I rowed in an eight and came in third in both the Head of the Welland, as well as the Trent.
My previous rowing experience includes a summer with the Toronto Argonauts (back in '06). I prefer sweeping to sculling as it provides a better outlet for socializing, and the balancing is a lot easier. My dream in doing this sport is to become a rowing coach one day.
Best Quote: "Pick up the pace!" (reference to the erg relay we did a few weeks back)
From the Coaches Corner
After the long winter season spent on the erg, it finally comes time to row. A few bad habits surely follow you inside the boat. One of these bad habits is the position of the elbows. Most of you have the tendency to draw the elbows in to the body when completing the drive. Envision that you are sitting in front of a table, your arms are stretched out to the catch position and then ...pull your arms across a table. If done properly this keeps your forearms parallel to the water (or the table), elbows away from the body, and perhaps most importantly - keeps your shoulders low and relaxed.
