4 in the morning. - the alarm bells, the alarm for guelph -. the eyes of the don rowing club racing crews open and excitement fills the brain with adrenalin.
devotional - all over the greater toronto area the blue racing suits of don, appearing out of the treasure corner of the closets. shaking hands. the trailer already arrived at the conservational area at guelph. two coaches - in silence, skilled worker hands, unloading the boats. strecher by strecher filled with the material of work. ... our rowers.
32 boats of don racing in burning sun. 32 hopes and 32 reactions of frustrations and happiness.
the meed of asceticism training earned by our toughest crews. our womens 8, never in your wildest dreams get this feeling, 2000m of burning passion blow the whole competition the mark of don.
like a unruly stallion, way in front of the field - silence in the grand stand, honour by silence.
well organized in a summer day our teams running down the course and out of our 32 crew - 22 first and second places have been the result of our crews.
ed, celena, fred and me proud and, after some races, thoughtful of our girls and boys, high fived in the evening when our lwt. mens 8+ just got beat by a length of the leander heavy 8+.
the first results did all of us glad - the track looks straight, just some set screws have to be fixed, but all coaches are focused to set the team to find the coals to move into unforgeable moments.

Recreational Rowers - Road Trip to West Side Rowing Club - June 14-09
Sunday June 14, 2009
Rec Crew,
If you weren't in Buffalo today, you missed a great time!
A group of seventeen of us crossed the boarder today to row at the West Side Rowing Club in Buffalo, New York. Our gracious hosts arranged for an impromptu regatta between West Side, Chautauqua and the Dons. With our great turnout, we had enough rowers to crew one and 7/8 boats.
For the sake of keeping this email brief, I will only comment on the first race - a Don's boat won!
Our original plan was to venture to the Anchor Bar for some post-row celebratory wings and beer. However our plans were scrubbed when West Side surprised us with a full-blown gourmet feast.
I'm delighted to say that we will be seeing more of WSRC this year as they plan to attend our Tops & Bottoms Regatta. Also, they have agreed to partake in our DRC Recreational Global Challenge.
A heartfelt thank you again to John Cartus, all West Side crew who made the day possible, Chautauqua and of course to all of our Don's Crew.
Any suggestions for our next Road Trip? (Be sure to check out the attached picture.)
Regards,
Scott

CANADIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS ROWING ASSOCIATION REGATTA 2009
Thu, 4 Jun 2009
This year’s Schoolboys regatta began on May 29th with the Senior Mens 2X race. Graham Watt and Avin Veerakumar represented their school, Appleby College. Graham and Avin rowed the best that they have so far this year, and had a great last 1000m but finished 4th in their heat. They had a strong finished but were edged out at the line by .5 seconds. They did not advance to the semi-finals but both felt that they had raced well.
Carter and Brandon Woodward also raced in the Senior Mens 2X race representing Hillfield Strathallan College. They came 4th in their heat and missed the semi-finals by the smallest of margins.
The next race of the day was the Senior Womens 2X. Katie Guest and Miruna Iona represented Etobicoke Collegiate. Although they don’t train at the same club and have not rowed that much together they were able to make it through to the semi-finals. Their semi was a tough race with less than perfect rowing conditions. They did not advance to the final but were pleased that they had gotten through to the semi-finals.
Vanessa Beland represented her school, Humberside, in the Senior Womens 1X. This field was very strong. It was Vanessa’s first single race and with such a strong field she was unable to advance. It was quite close and she only missed a spot in the semi-finals by a few seconds.
Saturday’s racing started with the Junior Mens 2X. Kieran Tierney and Tom McMillan represented their school, Mentor College. They are a novice double and this was their second race. They rowed together better than the coaches, Ed and Celena, have ever seen. They passed a boat for the first time in a race, finished 5th in their heat and were happy with their row.
The last race for the juniors from the Don Rowing Club was Alyxandra Crepsac in the Junior Womens 1X. She, like Vanessa, was racing the single for the first time. The weather was not cooperating during this part of the day. The winds and waves were quite incredible. Alyx was a bit nervous but Ed reassured her that she could handle the water conditions. She had a strong last 1000m and was just edged out at the line by 1.5 seconds for 4th place in her heat. She missed the final by that margin and finished 7th overall.
Bernhard, Ed and Celena were all disappointed that Lorne Park Secondary School would not provide the athletes from their school a written letter stating that they were full-time students. Therefore all students from Lorne Park were not permitted by CSSRA to race.
The days were long for Ed and Celena but it was great to see lots of great high school races from Don Rowing Club athletes as well as super fast 8’s from Shawnigan and EL Crossley!
